Dr. Lei Bi received her D.M.A. in Piano Performance from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. She has studied applied piano beginning at age nine at the Wuhan Conservatory of Music in China. Lei then continued her study at Ohio University, where she earned her bachelor’s degree summa cum laude in Piano Performance. During the study at Ohio University, she was the recipient of numerous awards, including A Fine Arts Talent Award, Music Talent Award, the Mac S. Bethel Scholarship Fund, and Special Talent Award. In 2014, she received a master’s degree in Piano Performance from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln where she was recipient of the full Graduate Teaching Assistantship, under the instruction of Dr. Paul Barnes.
Along with solo performance, Lei is an active collaborator and performs with the diverse ensembles. She is particularly interested in contemporary music and have performed a number of works by American living composers, including Philip Glass, William Bolcom, Joan Tower, John Adams, and Steve Reich. Additionally, she is a member of the American honor society, Pi Kappa Lambda.
As a piano teacher, Lei aims to train students to become independent in learning and playing music. She introduces students to a wide range of repertoires from different periods, not only presenting it but also teaching independent critical learning and thinking. It is important to her that her students encounter music they have not heard of or learned before and learn to express their own perceptions and make musical decisions. She offers adequate space for them to express their own artistic interpretations and building up different personal style of playing. She hopes her students can master a great technique and express their own interpretations of music through their passionate performance eventually. She feels that her duty is not merely telling people how to play a piece, but also training students how to become an independent musician.
Her personal motto for life: Life's true gift lies in your freedom to design it beautifully. With each rise of the sun, you get to chase the opportunity to fill your days with meaning—to live your life the way you choose.
